Hall of Fame MLB outfielder and 8-time All-Star known as the Silver Fox; helped lead the Dodgers to World Series Championships in 1955 and 1959.
He played football, basketball, and baseball at Compton High School and graduated in 1944.
His #4 jersey was retired by the Los Angeles Dodgers and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980.
Had two sons and two daughters with his wife Beverly, whom he married in 1947.
He played alongside shortstop Pee Wee Reese on the 1955 World Series Champion Dodgers and was coached by Reese on the 1959 World Series Championship squad.
