African American doctor who performed the first open heart surgery in 1893. He was the surgeon-in-chief of Freedman's Hospital in Washington, D.C from 1893 to 1898.
He was the son of a free African American barber.
He founded Provident Hospital, which was the first non-segregated hospital in the United States.
He married Alice Johnson in 1898.
He was the first African American cardiologist, while Jackie Robinson was the first African American MLB player of the current age.
