Donald Coggan
Religious Leader
English priest and author who served as the 101st Archbishop of Canterbury from from 1974 to 1980. As Archbishop, he was a strong advocate for the ordination of women, which the Anglican church put into effect in 1994.
He was ordained a priest in 1935 and became a Bishop in 1956. He was appointed Archbishop of York in 1961.
From 1957 to 1976, he served as the honorary President of the United Bible Societies.
He was married to Jean Braithwaite, and they had two children.
He served as Archbishop of Canterbury during the tenure of Pope John Paul II in Rome.
