He studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and made his Broadway debut in 1951.
He gave acclaimed performances in numerous films, including Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, A Hatful of Rain, and The Bachelor Party.
He had two children with his first wife, Bus Stop co-star Hope Lange, and three children with his second wife, Bettie Johnson.
His love interest in Bus Stop was played by the iconic star Marilyn Monroe.
