Prominent jazz stride artist who worked with musicians like Sidney Bechet, George Lewis, Bunk Johnson, Kid Ory, and Muggsy Spanier.
He formed his own trios in Baltimore during the 1930s. He played a role in the New Orleans jazz revival in the mid-1940s.
He played with the Jack Teagarden band from 1956 until 1962.
His daughter died from a combination of cancer and the effects of two strokes.
He drew inspiration from Earl Hines and Jelly Roll Morton.
