British actor and singer (tenor) who played Lofty Sugden in the 1970s sitcom, It Ain't Half Hot Mum, and also starred in The League of Gentlemen.
He was forced, at age eight, to evacuate Manchester, England when the Germans bombed his home city. During this time, he developed a love for singing through his participation in the choir at Lancashire's Holy Trinity Parish Church.
He was only four feet and nine inches tall.
He was married twice and spent the last years of his life in New Zealand.
He was born in the same year as the their English actor, Michael Caine.
