She graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and started performing in theatre roles.
She received the Royal Television Society's best actress award in 2001, making her the first black actor to win one of their major awards.
She has two daughters. In March 2020, she got engaged to Gerry Zucarello.
Like Betsy Palmer, she had a role on the British soap opera EastEnders.
