Civil rights activist and co-founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee who led the first successful campaign to de-segregate lunch counters in Nashville in 1960.
She was the runner-up for Miss Illinois.
She played a crucial role in the Freedom Rides to desegregate travel and the Selma Campaign, which led to voting rights for African-Americans.
She married and later divorced
She was appointed to a national committee by John F. Kennedy to help make way for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
