Novelist whose satirical works often feature American female characters living abroad in France. Her novel, Persian Nights, was a 1988 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
Before becoming a novelist, she wrote a column for The New York Review of Books. She won the California Book Award for her 1997 work, Le Divorce.
She co-wrote the screenplay for The Shining, basing it on the novel of the same title by horror author Stephen King.
She was born in Moline, Illinois. In her adulthood, she divided her time between Paris and San Francisco.
Her novel, Le Divorce, was adapted into a film starring Kate Hudson.
