Poet
Modernist poet and author who is remembered for Lady Chatterley's Lover, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and other novels. His works of short fiction include The Rocking-Horse Winner and Odour of Chrysanthemums.
He studied at Nottingham High School, but left school in 1901 to work at a factory that produced surgical tools.
He was very close to his mother, and her death represented a major turning point in his life and literary career, as is evidenced in his autobiographical novel Sons and Lovers.
He grew up in Nottinghamshire, England. He married Frieda Weekley; they later divorced.
He was portrayed by actor Ian McKellen in the 1981 film Priest of Love.
