After serving as Chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party, this prominent Turkish politician became his country's Deputy Prime Minister. Upon leaving office in the first decade of the 21st Century, he continued his political career by serving in the Turkish Parliament.
After earning a PhD from Gazi University, he taught college-level economics. He began his involvement with politics in the late 1980s, serving as a board member of the Nationalist Task Party.
He served as Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey under the administration of Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit.
He was born and raised in southern Turkey's Osmaniye Province as a member of a Sunni Islamic family.
He and Ali Babacan both held office as Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey.
