Derek Bentley
Criminal
English criminal who was hanged for his role in the murder of a police officer in 1952. The fact that it was his accomplice, rather than himself, who fired the fatal gunshot made his murder case the subject of much controversy.
He had many health issues and sustained major head injuries after the house he was living in was bombed during World War II.
He received a posthumous royal pardon with respect to his death sentence in 1993. In 1998, his murder conviction was entirely quashed.
He had a sister named Iris, who publicly fought for his pardoning.
He was portrayed by Christopher Eccleston in the 1991 film Let Him Have It.
