She composed her first song at the age of five.
Also a stage actress, she played Eponine in the 1992 Broadway production of Les Misérables and Sandy in the London West End production of Grease.
She grew up in a musical family in Merrick, New York. She was previously engaged to Jonathan Kanterman. In 2008, she began a relationship with Rutledge Taylor.
She shared the 1989 Songwriter of the Year award with Bruce Springsteen.
