He started playing in Bury FC's youth system at age 16 before making his professional debut in 2002.
He was named the Football League Player of the Year in 2006 with Bury FC.
He was raised with his siblings in Huyton, Merseyside, England.
He made one appearance alongside Wayne Rooney on England's national team in 2007.
