Late Irish actor best remembered as Grandpa Joe in Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He was also known for his roles in Stardust, Into the West, and The Jigsaw Man.
He studied watercolor art after graduating from The Abbey School of Acting.
He won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Irish Film and Television Awards in 2005.
He married Laurie Morton in 1961. The couple had two children named David Jr. and Miriam.
He co-starred in the 2001 comedy Mean Machine with Vinnie Jones.
