He was signed to Elton John's record label The Rocket Record Company in 1971 while he was still a teenager.
He co-wrote the theme song for the comedy Ruthless People with Mick Jagger.
He was married to Pam Stewart from 1973 to 1977 and Siobhan Fahey from 1987 to 1996. In 2001, he married Anoushka Fisz. He has four children named Sam, Django, Kaya and Indya.
He and Annie Lennox were romantically involved for a time.
