He began racing in 1956 at drag strips.
While his career was short, it was illustrious: in 110 Sports Car and NASCAR races, he collected a stunning 47 wins.
He was born in El Monte, California.
One of his pallbearers was Carroll Shelby, who signed him in 1963 to drive Cobras.
