He played at Garland High School and Midland College before being drafted by the New Jersey Nets in 1989.
He was known for his stellar defensive play and led the NBA in steals two years in a row.
His sons both played football at the University of Kentucky in 2001.
He often went by Mookie Blaylock, which was the original name of popular rock band Pearl Jam, fronted by singer Eddie Vedder.
