Remembered for his work on such 1950s and early 1960s films as The Rose Tattoo, Come Back Little Sheba, and BUtterfield 8, this New York-born director often adapted theatrical productions for the big screen.
He began acting in stage productions in his childhood years and trained at New York's their Neighborhood Playhouse.
He died from heart problems at the age of seventy-nine and was laid to rest in Los Angeles' Hillside Memorial Park.
His marriage to actress Mary Kathleen Williams resulted in three children, including a daughter, Erica Mann, who became the wife of director and comedic actor Harold Ramis.
He directed I'll Cry Tomorrow, a 1955 biopic of Broadway actress Lillian Roth.
