Former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors known for being the assassin of Harvey Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Mascone. He was convicted of manslaughter in a trial which produced the their "Twinkie defense."
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1971.
He committed suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning less than two years after his release from prison.
He was the second of nine children.
He was portrayed by Josh Brolin, who received an Academy Award nomination for his performance, in the 2008 film Milk.
