He received his bachelor's in jazz studies from the New England Conservatory of Music.
He won two Grammy Awards in the Best Contemporary Jazz Album category with the Pat Metheny Group.
He was born in Saigon but his family moved to Bellevue, Washington in 1975.
He took a lot of inspiration from classical composers and musicians, including Ludwig Van Beethoven.
