Race car driver best known for becoming the first man to pass 400, 500, and 600 mph while driving turbojet-powered vehicles.
His first attempt to break land speed records came in 1962, using a freewheeling tricycle.
He became a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
He had three children with his wife Lee Breedlove.
He joined Louis Chevrolet as a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2000.
