He attended the University of Southern California film school, forming Canyon Films with several classmates and producing Sea Theme, which was submitted for a class project then edited and sold to TV.
His rich, powerful scenes earned him three Oscars - for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, American Beauty, and Road to Perdition.
His father James Normal Hall co-wrote Mutiny on the Bounty.
He was married for five years to Oscar-nominated actress Katharine Ross, star of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
