Ultramarathon runner who became best known for winning the inaugural Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon in 1983, at 61 years old.
Growing up, he worked on his parents farm, and herded 2,000 sheep on foot.
In 1982, at the age of 60, he attempted to set the world record for 1,000 miles, but stopped after just 500.
In 1983 he married Mary Howell, who was 39 years younger than he was, and they got divorced in 1988.
His record at the Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon was broken just a few years later by Yiannis Kouros.
