She attended Magdalene College, Cambridge and also trained as a violinist at the Royal College of Music.
She appeared with actress Judi Dench in a 2000 television movie entitled The Last of the Blonde Bombshells.
She married James Roscoe in 2008; they welcomed a son in 2014.
She and Huw Edwards co-hosted several music-themed BBC4 documentary programs.
