Before Fame

He grew up in the world of theater and made his stage debut in Nell of Old Drury at the age of eleven. He caught the eye of Herbert Beerbohm Tree, founder of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, who paid for his elocution classes.

Trivia

He won a Tony Award in 1951 for his performance in Darkness at Noon, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the films Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Casablanca, Mr. Skeffington, and Notorious.
