Claribel Alegría

Major Nicaraguan poet, author, journalist, and 2006 recipient of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature. Her numerous literary works include Despierta, mi bien, despierta; Tunnel to Canto Grande; Sobrevivo; and Flowers from the Volcano.
She studied at George Washington University after moving to the United States in the early 1940s.
Her belief in government resistance allied her with the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in Nicaragua.
Her birth name was Clara Isabel Alegria Vides, and she grew up in Nicaragua and El Salvador.
She and Adam Zagajewski were both recipients of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature during the first decade of the twenty-first century.
