He was an amateur champion in Banjarnegara before gaining the attention of renowned boxing trainer Sutan Rambing.
He was given the WBA Fighter of the Decade award in Panama City in 2012.
His father is a former amateur boxer.
He was succeeded as WBA Featherweight champion by Yuriorkis Gamboa in November 2003.
