Chester Dewey
Botanist
18th Century American botanist and clergyman who specialized in the study of grasses. He was a regular contributor to the American Journal of Science.
He studied for the ministry at Williams College before professor of mathematics and natural philosophy there.
He was an expert on the genus Carex, the largest genus of flowering plants.
He had five children with his wife Sarah Dewey.
His studies in botany preceded Gregor Mendel's.
