He was a clerk on a boat whose route stretched from St. Louis, Missouri, to St. Paul, Minnesota.
He sold all of his interests in the river navigation business after the Civil War and began to invest in railroads.
He was raised as a Methodist, and his father was a circuit preacher for the church. His only child Camilla died when she was just 13.
He was friends with President William Howard Taft.
