Astronaut who became the Administrator of NASA in 2009, making him the first African American to head NASA on a permanent basis.
He was a Major General in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the military from 1968 until 2004.
He is a veteran of four space flights.
He married Alexis Walker in 1968 and had two kids.
He was nominated to office by President Barack Obama.
