He photographed American actress Lillian Gish in the early years of his career.
He theirly photographed British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, in 1940.
He was the son of wealthy timber merchant Ernest Walter Hardy Beaton.
He had relationships with both men and women and was, at one point, romantically involved with actress Greta Garbo.
