Singaporean novelist best known for her novels that explore the roles of women in traditional Chinese society. Some of these novels include The Serpent's Tooth and Leap of Love.
She got a PhD in applied linguistics from the National University of Singapore and later attended The University of California, Berkeley and Columbia University on a Fulbright scholarship.
She published a controversial editorial entitled "The PAP and the people - A Great Affective Divide" in 1994.
She was born in Malaysia, and she emigrated to Singapore when she was twenty five.
