He made his fortune in banking during the Great Depression and after, creating a net worth of close to $2.5 billion in 2006.
He was hailed by Twins fans for saving a franchise on the brink of leaving the city, but then was a target of ire after shopping the team around and seriously considering shutting it down.
He had three sons with his wife of 58 years Eloise. All three went on to hold executive board memberships in the Twins organization.
His loan of $3 million to Bud Selig , the commissioner of baseball, led many Twins fans to believe he and Selig struck a deal to sell off the Twins.
