Politician who was the first President of Zimbabwe and served from 1980 until 1987. He was known for bringing together two of the country's political parties, the Zimbabwe African National Union and the Zimbabwe African People's Union.
He was a student at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.
He served one year in prions after being found guilty of sodomy in 1997.
He married Janet Mbuyazwe in 1961 and they had four children together.
His Prime Minister was Robert Mugabe.
