Served as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1798 to 1829.
He graduated from the College of William and Mary.
He helped to create the American Colonization Society, which provided assistance to free black people immigrating to Africa.
He was the nephew of George Washington.
He was nominated to the Supreme Court by President John Adams.
