He studied classical piano as a young boy. He was commissioned by famed theatrical producers the Shuberts to write music for Greenwich Village Follies, a revue.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972.
He married Marian Seaman in 1935.
He discovered Judy Garland when she was still known as Frances Gumm and was only 13. Her rendition of Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart caught his attention and prompted him to call MGM music department head Jack Robbins.
