She studied English and theatre at Vermont's Bennington College.
Her birth name was Laura Elisse Salenger and she grew up in Chicago and Los Angeles.
Her first husband, Mark Smith, was also a singer with The Fall. They divorced in 1989. She and her second husband, Philip Start, established a London boutique in 2002.
Her 1997 EP, Happy Unbirthday, included a cover of a song by David Bowie.
