He and Holland–Dozier–Holland were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
He grew up in Detroit with an older brother named Eddie.
He co-wrote songs for Motown artists such as Marvin Gaye as part of the songwriting and production team Holland-Dozier-Holland.
