He was drafted 16th overall out of high school, making him the fourth highest-drafted Canadian in MLB history.
He won a bronze medal at the 2009 Baseball World Cup with the Canadian National Team.
His sister Danielle Lawrie was a softball pitcher at the University of Washington. In 2016 he married Dana Long.
He joined slugger Jose Bautista on the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011.
