He changed his name from Alfred Jesse Smith to Brenton Wood after he graduated high school.
He did not own the rights to any of his songs; they are all owned by the Los Angeles disc jockey, Art Laboe.
His father moved Wood from Lousiana to San Pedro California when he was a child.
He was heavily inspired by the music of Sam Cooke.
