He began his career as a reporter for various Ohio newspapers.
He penned biographies of President Abraham Lincoln and poet Walt Whitman.
His first wife, Susan Brainerd, died just months after their 1892 wedding. Three years later, he married Susan's sister, Ella Brainerd.
He was named Ambassador to Belgium by President Woodrow Wilson.
