He debuted as a head coach for Furman University's football team in 1994 and later joined Vanderbilt University in 2002, where he coached until 2010.
He played baseball, basketball, and football at Eau Claire High School in South Carolina.
He was a defensive coordinator at Clemson in 1993.
He was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina.
NFL wide receiver Earl Bennett played for him at Vanderbilt.
