Popular British TV personality. In 1995, the British Comedy Awards presented him with the Lifetime Achievement for Comedy for his contributions to cartooning.
He served in the Royal Air Force Regiment in 1948 and was able to secure a contract with the BBC because of a letter that he had a commander unwittingly sign saying he was a war hero and deserved an audition.
Eight years later, the Television and Radio Industries Club presented him with the Special Award for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting.
After marrying Elizabeth Thompson in 1949, the couple had two sons and adopted a daughter.
He occasionally wrote jokes for American comedians like Bob Hope.
