Father to actor Kurt Russell, he is well known for his roles as Deputy Clem Foster in Bonanza and Robert in The Magnificent Seven.
He had several uncredited roles to begin his career before making his real debut in the television film Cavalry Patrol in 1956.
He appeared in more than several television series through his career including parts in Johnny Ringo, The Untouchables, The Monkees, Emergency!, and Dick Tracy.
He was married to Louise Julia Crone from 1946 until his death and was survived by four children which includes Kurt Russell.
He appeared in I Dream of Jeannie, which starred Barbara Eden.
