His film career began as a camera assistant with New Theatres Pvt. Ltd.
His film Madhumati set a record by winning nine Filmfare Awards in 1958, a record that stood for the next 37 years.
He was born into a zamindar family in Suapur.
He was inspired to make his film Do Bigha Zameen after watching The Bicycle Thieves, which was directed by Italian director Vittorio Desica.
