American country singer who released the song "Gotta Travel On" in 1959. It was an instant pop and country crossover hit.
He joined the U.S. Army during World War II and also worked as an apprentice toolmaker for the Washington Naval Gun Factory.
He was a performer at the Grand Ole Opry.
He married high school sweetheart, Ruth Burzynski, in 1944.
He recorded a cover version of Bobby Bare's song, "Detroit City," in 1963 and titled it "I Wanna Go Home."
