Scottish actor and comedian who appeared in The Last Samurai and Gulliver's Travels. He was nominated for a BAFTA for his role in Mrs. Brown and appeared in the 1996 film, Muppet Treasure Island, and in the 1999 cult classic film The Boondock Saints.
Raised in a tenement in Glasgow, he was sexually assaulted by his father from the age of ten to fifteen. He worked as a ship welder and was a talented banjo player.
The BBC made a six-part documentary about his tour through England on a motorcycle.
He had two children during his first marriage. He married his second wife, comedian and psychologist Pamela Stephenson, in 1989, and they had three children together.
He played the dwarf warrior Dain Ironfoot in the Peter Jackson Hobbit movies.
