He began performing in summer stock theatrical productions in the late 1920s and went on to appear with Helen Hayes in a 1943 stage production of Harriet.
He made a brief appearance in the science fiction film The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.
His marriage to television actress Darlene Conley produced three sons.
He shared the stage with Paul Robeson in a Shubert Theatre production of Othello.
