Hall of Fame head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s who popularized spread-passing in the West Coast Offense.
He was a running back in the Bay Area.
In nine years with the 49ers he won six division titles, three NFC Championship titles, and three Super Bowls.
He married Geri Nardini in 1954 and he had three kids: Steve, Elizabeth and Craig.
In his very first year as coach of the 49ers he drafted the quarterback Joe Montana from Notre Dame.
